LST Heavy Liquid is a premium low toxicity heavy liquid designed for density separation of minerals, geological materials, fossils, pollen, coal and other particulate samples. LST Heavy Liquid provides the best possible separation while offering excellent handling, recovery and recycling characteristics.
For laboratories and researchers performing high-density separations, LST Heavy Liquid combines low viscosity, high thermal stability and low toxicity in a ready-to-use liquid. It can be adjusted to the density required for your application and is particularly effective from low densities to 2.9 g/mL at 25°C. LST Heavy Liquid can also be used at higher densities, up to 3.4 g/mL at elevated temperatures.
Why choose LST Heavy Liquid?
Faster, cleaner safe separations. LST Heavy Liquid has significantly lower viscosity than sodium polytungstate at high densities, allowing particles to separate more effectively and making filtration and washing faster. At a density of 2.85 g/mL and 25°C, LST Heavy Liquid has a viscosity of approximately 10 cP.
Excellent thermal stability. LST Heavy Liquid solutions remain stable at elevated temperatures, allowing diluted or contaminated solutions to be reconcentrated by evaporation. The recovery and reuse of LST Heavy Liquid is more straightforward than with competing tungsten based heavy liquids.
Low vapour pressure and no noxious fumes during normal use. Unlike traditional organic heavy liquids such as bromoform and tetrabromoethane, LST Heavy Liquid is an aqueous tungsten based heavy liquid with no significant vapour pressure, apart from water. Normal laboratory use therefore does not require a fume cupboard for vapour control. Appropriate gloves, eye protection and good laboratory practice should always be followed.
Highly recyclable. LST Heavy Liquid can be recovered from separated samples by washing with deionised water, filtering and concentrating the washings by evaporation. Recovery efficiencies of greater than 99% are achievable, helping to minimise product loss and operating costs.
